“Should I plan for labour?”

Is this something you’ve considered? Have you been putting labour to the back of your mind? Or is it something you’ve overlooked, until now?

Do you believe labour and your experience of it is something you have control over?

It’s possible you’ve been told not to bother making a birth plan because “labour never goes to plan”. This suggests that you will have absolutely no control over your birth, which just isn’t true. Yes, there are things outside of your control (like anything in life), but there are many things within your control.

Take a moment to consider how you would approach a marathon; it’s unlikely you would think “well it might not go to plan, if I break my ankle a week before I’ll have wasted my time, so I’ll not do any training”.

Don’t you think it would be ludicrous to think you could turn up on the day and perform such a physically demanding task without any training?

Similarly, it just doesn’t make sense to approach birth with such a casual attitude.

Birth is just one day, we hear this a lot right? But its so important to raise the bar from something to endure, to something to reflect on positively - the outcomes of labour and your experience of it will last a lifetime.

Preparing for your birth is one of the single most important things you can do during your pregnancy.

Not only will you be able to approach your birth with optimism and confidence - if anything unexpected crops up along the way, you can feel equipped to navigate the situation.

Many people feel they will just go with the flow when it comes to the birth of their baby. However, without a good understanding of the birth process and unbiased information about options, it’s very easy to let others make key decisions on your behalf.

You, as an expectant parent should feel empowered to make choices about what is right for you and your baby.

Going with the flow…is there any fear lurking in the shadows?

Many people don’t realise they have lots of unhelpful beliefs about birth that are hiding away in a ‘filing cabinet’ in their mind. Their only frame of reference for birth is likely to be what they’ve seen on TV, what other people have told them and what they’ve read about.

When it comes to actually giving birth, their mind will search for all the little bits of information it has stored up over the years about birth. If these things are negative, it’s likely that the mind will go into a state of fear.

Fear is not our friend during labour - it causes the body to become tense. Tension makes it much more difficult for the birthing muscles to work as they should, which not only makes labour longer, but also causes the sensations of labour to feel more painful. These painful sensations then lead to MORE fear. This is referred to as the fear, tension, pain cycle.

During my hypnobirthing course, this cycle is explored in much more detail and addresses exactly HOW to remove any fears you have. Essentially, we will empty that filing cabinet of any fear-inducing beliefs about birth and refill it with much more helpful (and positive) beliefs.

Leaving the doubts and worries behind you will enable you to feel calm, confident and optimistic about your upcoming birth. These reassuring, positive feelings will allow you to enjoy the rest of your pregnancy and will be so beneficial to the wellbeing of you and your baby.

My Birth Experience

If you’re anything like me, you’ll want to approach the birth of your baby feeling prepared. I was SO thankful that I had put the work in before reaching the end of my pregnancy.

At 37 weeks pregnant, I was told I was ‘at risk’ due to the size of my baby; I did some additional research, referred back to my hypnobirthing notes and then confidently made an informed decision to go ahead with my initial birth plan.

My experience of labour was incredibly powerful, with no complications. Things do crop up, pregnancy and birth can be unpredictable, but choosing to prepare beforehand and take care of what is within your control makes a positive birth experience so much more likely.
